A Musical Journey and a Family Connection
George's love for music stems from her father's appreciation for jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. She grew up singing along to their iconic songs, which are now part of the 'High Society' soundtrack. This personal connection to the music makes her performance even more special. "Doing this show is really special for me because this is the music that I grew up with and sang along to," she says.
A Complex Character and a Relatable Story
Tracy Lord, the central character, is a Long Island socialite and divorcée, a rare and brave portrayal in 1951. George finds her character fascinating, as she navigates human relations and strives for control in a world of wealth and fabulousness. "She’s a very interesting character," George muses. "One of my first questions was ‘Why would we care about her?’ because on paper she’s got it all. But ultimately, it’s a story about human relations and Tracy is trying to control her life in the best way that she can."
A Musical Escape and a Timely Message
George believes 'High Society' is a much-needed escape from the current political climate. "I come out of the theatre, then I listen to the news and think ‘Oh God, I’m so glad that I’m doing High Society, not something that’s sad or political in any way’," she says. The show's joy and liveliness provide a much-needed respite from the uncertainties of the world.
Period Costumes and Personal Growth
George's experience with period costumes began with her role as Anna Leonowens in 'The King and I'. Despite the challenges of corsets, she appreciates the refined elegance of the costumes in 'High Society'. "Well, you’d think so, but I’m still never far away from a corset! It’s a different silhouette, though, with that kind of Dior A-line skirt with a tight-fitting top silhouette, rather than long, hooped and heavy skirts. The refined elegance of the costumes is just beautiful," she says.
A Diverse Career and a Balancing Act
George's career has taken her from ballet to musical theatre, backing singing for Elton John, and the iconic role of Nurse Trixie on 'Call the Midwife'. She also participated in 'Strictly Come Dancing' and returned to musical theatre in 'The King and I'. Juggling these diverse roles and projects is a challenge, but she finds fulfillment in playing rounded and fulfilling characters.
Family and the Show's Appeal
George is taking her daughters, Wren and Lark, to see 'High Society' during the summer holidays. She believes it's important for them to understand her work and the importance of theatre. "I love that I get to play these very rounded and fulfilling roles - especially in a show that’s as gorgeous and joyous as this one," she says.
